Several
of our club members have an interest in producing specialty
mushrooms.
For some it's a commercial venture, for others it's a pleasant,
rewarding
hobby. Numerous species of exotic and native mushrooms can be
grown
under a variety of conditions; controlled environment or naturally
outdoors
using a range of substrates: chopped straw in long, plastic bags,
blocks of sawdust and wood chips, natural outdoor logs, or inoculated
mulch
piles. During some of our past club events, we have visited these
sites and had cultivation slide presentations and discussions at our
foray
programs. There are usually a few members at each of our events
who
are willing to answer cultivation inquiries and provide info to anyone
who has a curiosity or an interest in getting started. For more
information,
contact Joe Christian (419) 757-4493..
Two excellent, inexpensive books on cultivation are:
"Growing Shiitake in a Continental Climate" by M. Kozak and J. Krawczyk
"Shiitake Growers Handbook" by Paul Przybylowicz and John Donoghue
