Calendar of Events for 2010

Please plan to join us at any of the regularly scheduled events listed below.  Email Jerry Pepera at jsp@pepera.net to receive notification of any impromptu events throughout the year.

All mini-forays and morel hunts are subject to cancellation.  RSVP to the host is mandatory so they can contact interested parties in the event of a cancellation.  Call the host a day or two before to confirm that the event is still on.  Please bring a whistle and compass.

April 24 (Saturday) - Morel Hunt - Salt Fork State Park in Cambridge, OH.

May 1 (Saturday) - Morel Hunt - Beaver Creek.

Directions: Exit OH Route 11 onto OH Route 170.  Go north for about 1-1.5 mi.  McDonald’s is on the left and meeting area is Ogilve parking lot just before McDonalds.

July 16-18 (Friday-Sunday) - Summer Foray - Ohio University, Athens, OH.

Program: July 16 (Fri.)

Meet at the Ohio Brew Week Garden on Station St. at 7:00 pm. For various kinds of Bar-B-Qes (including mushroom & veggie options). Several Ohio brew pubs will be selling their specialty beers. They will reserve a large table for us. There will be antique cars and Harleys on display, and jazz music.

July 17 (Sat.)

Meet in room 300 Porter Hall for registration and coffee from 8:30 -9:30 am.
Forays will begin at 10:00 am. We will go to several different sites in the local hills.
We will have a potluck lunch, so please, everyone, bring something, especially a covered dish, to share. Any wild mushrooms for consumption must be verified by expert collectors.

Michael Kuo will give a talk on “20 Cool Mushrooms” at 1:30 pm. Afternoon forays will begin at 3:00 pm.

A table talk with explanation of the day’s collections will begin at 5:30 pm.

For those of you still standing, there is free music and more beer tasting opportunities on Court St. Brew Week activities are scheduled throughout the weekend, and will include shopping with local craft vendors.

July 18 (Sun.)

Breakfast at Porter Hall 300 at 8:30 am.
Daniel Molter will give a talk on “Species, Specific Taxa, and the Species Category” at 9:30 am.
 

   
Directions: Information on parking at O.U.:

Since our event is taking place on a weekend after 5:00 p.m. the dark green and purple lots on campus will be available for our free use. Signs at the entrance to each lot indicate lot color and number. A map detailing lot colors and locations can be accessed at: http://www.facilities.ohiou.edu/parking.

Do not park in metered (unless you pay the meter) or restricted spaces within a dark green or purple lot on July 17-19, as these spaces are monitored. Lots 127,128 & 129 (surrounding Building 95, the Convocation Center) are across Richland Ave. from Porter Hall (Building 86,) to the south. Lot 134 is the closest lot on the same side of Richland Ave., and is also to the south of Porter Hall. Lot 120 which is the closest to Porter Hall has metered and handicap spaces, but is not one of the free parking lots. We should be able to unload any large equipment from lot 120. For the Friday night event, we can park in lot 109 by Building 149 Life Sciences, if there is not sufficient parking at the event itself.

From Columbus:

Take US-33 East to exit 17, the OH-682 exit. Turn right onto Richland Avenue at the traffic light. At the next light S. Shafer St. is to the left, and South Green Drive is to the right. Lots 127, 128, and 129 are the first lots accessible from a left turn at the light, and are then immediately to the right. Lot 134 is accessible from a right turn onto South Green Drive at the same light, and is the first lot on the left. To find lot 120, turn right at the light and then take the first street left which is Oxbow Trail. Lot 120 is the first lot on the left.

From Marietta:

Take US-50 West to exit 17, the OH-682 exit. Follow directions above.

From Cincinnati:

Take OH-32 East to Athens, and merge onto OH-32 E/US-33 W/US-50 E via the ramp to Columbus/Belpre. Exit at OH-682. Follow directions above.

Directions for Friday night Ohio Brew Week get together:

Take the OH-682 exit as directed above. Turn right onto Richland Ave. at the traffic light. Turn left at the first light beside the large round Convocation Center, Building 95. This is S. Shafer St. which curves to the right, and brings you to the first light at W. Union St. Turn right onto W. Union St. Take the third right, which is Depot St. You will see the old train station, and outdoor tables and vendors on the right from Depot St. before you get to Station St. Lot 109 is on the left at the intersection of Depot and Station.

Directions for Saturday dinner at Lui Lui's restaurant:

Same as Friday night. Lui Lui's is in the first block of Station St. on the right. Or you can walk 5 minutes from Porter Hall.

   
Accomodations: Camping at Stroud’s Run State Park. Fill out self-registration forms available at the entrance to the campground when you arrive, or register ahead on this website: http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/parks/strouds/tabid/790/Default.aspx. Up to six people may share a campsite. Cost per site is $18.00/night. Located at 11661 State Park Road, (off Stroud’s Run Road) Athens, Ohio 45701. Park information: (740) 592-2302, 1-866-644-6727. It’s a 15-20 min. drive to O.U.

2) Dorm housing is available at Ohio University. Shared rooms are $26.00/person/night. Single rooms are $39.00. Linens are available for $5.00. Contact Niki Ohms at (740) 593-4084 for reservations. Ten day notice for reservations is appreciated.

3). Days Inn Athens is offering us a group rate of $62.99/ night. Room choices include non-smoking, 1 or 2 double beds, king bed, or handicap access, all at this rate when you mention the Ohio Mushroom Society. For more than two people to a room, add $10.00/person. Register by June 14 for the group rate. They are located at 330 Columbus Rd., just off the Columbus Rd. exit on state route 33. 10 minute drive to O.U. (740) 593-6655.

August 14 (Saturday) - Mini-foray - Poland Municipal Forest

Instructions: Meet at 10 am at Bruster’s Ice Cream Stand on Route 224 in Poland, OH.  Foray will be at Zedaker Pavillion, Poland Municipal Forest near Poland, OH.  We will go no matter the weather.  RSVP is mandatory to facilitate notifications in the case of a cancellation.
   
Directions: Meet at Bruster’s Ice Cream Stand on Route 224 in Poland. It is on south side of 224, just east of Route 616 (a traffic light) and west of Yellow Creek. We’ll travel to the forest from there. See OMS website for a map: Click for map and directions.

August 21 (Saturday) - Mini-foray - Chance Creek, Lorain County Metroparks.

August 28 (Saturday) - Mini-Foray - Groves Woods.

Description: The Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the OMS will hold a Mini Foray. Enjoy roaming over 155 acres of Cleveland Museum of Natural History Preserve.

Instructions: Meet at 10 am, foray will go till 1 pm. Bring a brown bag lunch. Water will be provided.  Yellow OMS Foray signs will be posted alongside the road. Primitive restroom facility. Meet at the cabin in the woods, follow the lane with smaller signs.

Directions: From the west, proceed along OH Rt. 87 to Girdle Road, which is the first intersection after you cross the Geauga/Trumbull County line. Turn left (north) onto Girdle Rd. and go under 2 miles to just opposite 9719 Girdle Rd. The woods are directly across. Park with care alongside the road. If you come to Sweet-West Road you have gone too far. In the Ohio Atlas & Gazetteer see p. 42 top right corner.

September 6 (Monday, Labor Day) - Mini-foray - Buckeye Trail.

The tavern is a small light brown brick building just north of Route 6 (Chardon Rd) on Route 306. They have a good variety of appetizers, salads, and entree's. Of course, they also serve alcohol. Depending on how busy they are, we may locate ourselves out back by the patio.
