Knoxville, Tennessee - April 2007
Hugh Urban reports:
We hunted two areas near Big Ridge S.P. and came out with about 180 morels,
mostly blacks with roughly 30 small yellows (esculenta), several little tulip
morels (deliciosa or whatever they call them these days) and a few half-frees
(semilibera) mixed in. Since I find mainly esculenta in central Ohio, I was
initially quite struck by how much more difficult the blacks are to spot in the
woods. After finding (or rather, being shown) a couple though, I sort of got the
hang of it and stumbled upon about 20 blacks, a couple semilibera and a half
dozen or so young esculenta.
Unfortunately, the sudden deep freeze put an abrupt end to our planned hunt for
Saturday morning. Hopefully it won't affect things too badly in Ohio other than
to push things back a bit.
